Why can't we design the city?

Some recent reflections about why it is better to ‘design’ cities than to ‘plan’ them.

This essay has been prompted by reflection on a year of particularly challenging experiences with local government planning processes, and a period where the planning of Sydney has become a focus of community discussion. We reflect on the implications that planning processes have on the physical form of Sydney, and ask ‘Why can’t we design the city?’
