The 2000 Olympic Games transformed the former abattoirs at Homebush Bay into an expansive civic precinct dotted with major sporting facilities. Staging the games required large scale spaces for logistics, transport and crowd management. Following 2000, the challenge is to transform Sydney Olympic Park into a compact township that accommodates the vitality and complexity of daily life.
The Vision Plan divides the large blocks into a finer grain pattern of streets and parks. The Australia Centre and Golf Driving Range will give way over time to high density, mixed use precincts. Tailored new functions such as educational uses can complement the sporting and showground precincts.
The plan allows for the far-sighted and orderly development of Sydney Olympic Park over the next 20 years. The development capacity, uses and densities have been tested and refined and coordinated with the staged implementation of public transport, infrastructure and community uses.
The 2025 Vision Plan is a model document containing sophisticated strategies and initiatives to promote the development of an appropriately urban future for Sydney.
